Alpine Hut Holiday in the Gastein Valley at 1.808 m
High up, near the tree line at an altitude of 1.808 m Seehöhe you’ll find our high alpine hut open to the public. Well-preserved, amid lush alpine meadows. The hut is over 150 years old and offers keen hiker and mountaineers a lovely spot for a well-earned rest or overnight stay. The tranquility, far away from the hustle and bustle down below is simply blissful. Fortify yourself with home-made produce and regional delicacies. Particularly in the evening, if you stay overnight, peace and quiet descends. Savour enjoyable hours by candlelight – there’s no electricity up here.
Quaint alpine hut in Dorfgastein with a welcoming atmosphere
Our unusual alpine hut, much-loved by hikers, is located on the south-facing slope of the “Wetterkreuz”. As there is no lift nearby, our alpine hut is far away from the crowds and we are pleased to see every guest who makes it up here. Spend a few days at our alpine hut and undertake lovely alpine hikes and mountain tours from here. You’re welcome to watch over our shoulder while we work.
Accommodation at our Präau-Hochalm hut
You’re welcome to stay overnight at our high alpine hut. In the evening the hut owner’s wife cooks regional specialities and in the morning you’ll be pampered with a tasty alpine breakfast (all our own produce). There’s hot water for showering. A barbecue and children’s play are also available.
Open to the public from the end of June to mid-September
We run our alpine farm in Dorfgastein every summer from the end of June to around mid-September with much love and enthusiasm. All animals come from our farm in the valley with us up to the alpine pasture – cows, horses, pigs, calves and our trusty dog, We create fresh milk products daily, plus juice, liqueurs, jams, ointments, teas etc. All our products are available from our small alpine shop.

There are many ways to reach the Präau High Alpine Hut:
As there is no lift or road near our hut, we are pleased to see any guest who makes it up to our hut.
- By car from Dorfgastein head towards Unterberg, before Unterberg head towards Strohlehenalm, continue as far as forest road barrier. Here you can park your car, then it’s a gentle hike along a forest track for about 2 hrs. up to our alpine hut.
- Or from the district of Luggau steeply upwards through the forest – walking time approx. 3 hours.
- Or from our Präau-Gut Farm (parking available) – walking time approx. 3 hours.
- Or from the railway station in Dorfgastein along the old road – walking time approx. 3,5 hours.
